Blisters and Birkenstocks

Getting to Split was long, and a little weird (what with the border crossing and such), but after our long day of walking, we walked up three flights of stairs to our airbnb to crash. It was a long day of sun exposure, walking, uncomfortable bus riding, and so we spent a little time resting before going out for dinner. Most restaurants were claimed already by anxious Croatians watching the game, so we wandered until we found a restaurant. Turns out it was a very fancy and expensive restaurant, but we decided to do it anyways. Our waiter was very nice, and was very concerned that we eat enough food. We ordered the special which was good, but small portions, and we ended up ordering a couple sides plus dessert. But it was all preeeeeettttyyyyy delicious. It was our little date night haha.

The next day started like all the others – later than we anticipated. We slept long, but gratefully, as we were still probably recuperating from the last few crazy days.

We eventually made our way into the main part of town, again a walled fortress, this one a little more extensive. We stopped for an early lunch (because that’s what time it was).

From there we toured the Cathedral, Bell Tower, Treasury, Crypt, and squares. It was still way too hot out, but at least we didn’t have backpacks to carry around all day.

Now, to my title. I was attempting to keep my vacation vibe, and sneakers and socks in 35 degree weather can feel gross, so I purchased some Birkenstocks, that came highly recommended from friends. I was warned that breaking in those sandals from a while, but I thought I was doing okay so I packed them just in case. And I thought it would be a low-key day just touring around, so I would give them a go. Near the end of the day I found myself in a drug store buying Hello Kitty bandaids for the 6 blisters (3 on each foot) from my shoes, which was a real bummer. But I ate whatever gelato/ice cream that I wanted, so that’s a win too.

Eventually we made our way back to our apartment, and wander down to the beach for a late afternoon/early evening swim.

We then went to a local restaurant that was a recommendation from our airbnb host. It was apparently a very authentic croatian restaurant, which we were totally down for.

We ordered the house special platter, which was labelled for two people (which we are). It was supposedly a plate of meat and potatoes (fries), so we ordered a salad so we had SOME veggies.

And indeed, it was a plate of meat and fries.

Now, we read that there would be a couple sausages, a lamb chop, a meat patty, bacon, etc. We did not anticipate that it would be all that meat x 2. So it was A LOT of meat that we did not anticipate. After a long day of walking and swimming in the heat, we still were not prepared to finish this platter. Plus, the salad was basically a plate of lettuce with 2 slices of tomato. What a bummer.

We then went back home and straight to bed, because that’s what you do when you eat a crap ton of food and feel exhausted from the sun.

So Split was an adventure.

On to the next one!
